Gregg International School G4 Class

Course Descriptions

Mathematics - Students face many challenges when they study mathematics, as parents and teachers know all too well. Mathematics instruction at GIS incorporates proven techniques that enable children to compute number operations correctly, while at the same time helping them understand the underlying concepts. We recognize that for mathematics education to be meaningful to young students, data sets or tangible quantitative problems should have some relevance to the children's lives. If they can relate to the rationale behind the numbers, then their motivation for finding correct solutions will be enhanced. Practical skills to be learned in G4 math class include identifying place values from hundred thousands to hundredths, estimating solutions to problems using addition, subtraction, and multiplication, and using mathematical symbols correctly. Identifying, comparing, and analyzing two- and three-dimensional shapes through hands-on activities will provide the students with valuable knowledge about geometrical principles. Measurement is another useful mathematical area in which finding the correct units to describe physical properties of objects can be a stimulating experience for young learners. And, the G4 math class will collect primary data through observation and experiments, then analyze and graph the data: activities sure to help students learn the practical benefits of mathematics.

Language Arts- READING - Developing the reading comprehension skills of the fourth grade learners is a key goal of our language arts program. With the abundant variety and volume of reading material available to us today, it is essential that students' reading skills enable them to decipher the meanings of many different kinds of texts and passages. Students will be learning and applying strategies and techniques that will provide with them with the means to enhance their reading comprehension abilities, whether it's a school assignment, or just for pleasure. A wide range of literary genres, as well as other forms of text such as advertising and interactive media, is used in reading class. To elicit interest in reading among students, we include their ideas in selecting texts or passages to read. Classroom interaction and discussion help to establish a firm basis for inquiry in the students, thus enabling them to probe deeply into the meaning of what they have read and assess its significance. WRITING ? One of the most important skills that a person can acquire is the ability to write in clear, coherent, and correct language. Without good writing ability, students will have difficulty prospering in their later years of education, not to mention the limits it would place on their career choices. Our 4G writing class promotes fine writing skills in students by teaching them to write in a wide variety of styles, as well as across the curriculum. We cover all aspects of writing, from note taking and outlining to revising and producing a final copy. In addition, students will keep a journal to record their experiences, thoughts, and feelings about various topics. Good writing skills are reinforced by good writing habits. Likewise, as students' writing skills improve and confidence in their ability to communicate in writing grows, they will be acquiring one of the most important tools that an education can provide: the ability to write well.

Science - Students gain a genuine understanding of science through direct experience and careful observation of phenomena. In conjunction with learning basic concepts of the life, earth, space, and physical sciences, our G4 science class conducts a wide range of observations and experiments that will elucidate the scientific principles being studied. For example, when studying the seasons, students may keep a record of sunrises and sunsets and the position of the sun in the sky over several weeks before and after an equinox. Another assignment involving the seasons has students observing the changes in plant and animal life of a particular habitat during different times of the year. Students are encouraged to inquire about why some plants and animals appear at different times of the year, while other plants and animals can be seen year round.

Social Studies - The essential insight of social studies is the recognition that human beings are social creatures who interact with each other in particular places at certain times. This simple truth is the foundation for the disciplines of history, geography, sociology, and related fields. Our G4 social studies class focuses on developing in students an aptitude for critical thinking as well as practical skills. One of the projects planned for the G4 students involves studying family histories. Investigating families' histories over generations can be a valuable learning experience for students. They will learn about history, geography, and society as these subjects are directly related to their own lives, thus showing them the relevance of acquiring skills that are used in these disciplines.

Art/Drama/Music - One of the most rewarding experiences that children can have involves conceiving and creating works that express their own aesthetic temperaments. Although most children may have only moderate talent in the fine arts or performing arts, these subjects present students with a challenge to develop a set of skills different from those used in reading, writing, and arithmetic. Each year our students actively engage in a number of dramatic presentations, musical recitals, and fine arts exhibits. Many of our students find that expressing themselves aesthetically allows them to communicate their thoughts and feelings more freely than when they use words or numbers. We make sure that each child has many opportunities to learn about art, drama, and music, and find personal satisfaction in them.

Physical Education - As children's bodies grow bigger and stronger, they need exercises and physical activities that will challenge and enhance their fine and gross motor skills. We offer appropriate exercise activities and sports for G4 students, while at the same time recognizing that, although children may be the same age, each one develops at a different pace. In addition to the physical benefits that sports and exercise provide, children gain valuable experiences that will help their social and personal development.

Computer Lab - Computer technology and its myriad applications are an indispensable part of our world today. Our G4 students receive instruction and computer time that is practical for their educational level. Our trans-disciplinary approach to learning also helps reinforce children's verbal, visual, and numerical skills as they develop their computer skills.
