Gregg International School G6 Class

Course Descriptions

Mathematics - As students' math skills become increasingly sophisticated, they will acquire a deeper understanding of mathematical operations and how those processes relate to one another. Whether students are solving algebraic equations, applying geometric theorems to real-world problems, or deciding on the appropriate statistical method to analyze a sample from a population, their knowledge of the relationships among numbers and between numbers and their phenomenological referents will grow and sharpen. Developing practical skills by using generalized rules that are common in different areas of mathematics is an important objective of G6 math class. Rather than focusing on rote memorization of principles, axioms, and theorems, we teach students to find patterns in algebraic, geometric, or statistical problems that illustrate generalized rules. Thus, students learn the process of mathematical reasoning while at the same time learning how mathematical rules facilitate problem solving. In addition to solving mathematical problems of a verbal or numerical nature and computing the necessary calculations fluently, students will also learn techniques that will enable them to make reasonable estimates when necessary. Knowing how to assess the degree of precision needed for an estimate and then deciding how to perform calculations that will provide a reasonable one is a skill that every person should have. Practice in the art of estimation will have students finding both quantitative and qualitative estimates for various types of problems.

Language Arts - READING - Expanding students' awareness of the world through literature is a signature component of the G6 reading program at GIS. Two of the principles on which our school is founded are a commitment to life-long learning and promoting a sense of community among people of diverse backgrounds. We think that literature provides an excellent means through which students can form strong intellectual skills to last a lifetime and also help them realize that they are members of an international community. Teachers choose reading selections that will elevate students' cultural awareness, while at the same time develop and enhance their comprehension and analytical skills. And, when appropriate, students are encouraged to select reading material for classroom work. In doing so, we hope to nurture in our students an intellectual independence that will be a valuable asset to them throughout their lives. Still, we recognize that G6 students need to continue improving all facets of their reading ability. With that in mind, selections from a wide range of content areas are included in the curriculum to insure that students get thorough and diversified reading practice. In addition, students are invited to discuss what they have read, not just “who did what, where, and when,” but “why do you think the author wrote those ideas, and how does that viewpoint compare with your own.” WRITING. Students in G6 at GIS get a comprehensive and challenging writing course that fully prepares them for secondary education, no matter which school they will attend. In addition to strengthening the mechanics and syntax of a student's writing, we help develop rhetorical skills that will enable a student to produce, select, organize, and express the ideas that best communicate what the student wants to say. To insure that students acquire versatile writing skills, different genres, such as description, exposition, and persuasion, are explored. In all types of writing, students work through the writing process. Significant time is allotted for prewriting and planning so students can build research, note taking, and outlining skills. After students write a first draft, they will practice revising and editing to improve the organization and fluency of their ideas. Finally, G6 students will have the opportunity to plan, develop, and write a research report using all of the skills they have learned.

Science - Scientific exploration provides us with some of the most exciting and rewarding experiences that we can have. Over the course of our lives we are constantly dealing with phenomena such as, light, heat, gravity, sound, and color, among others; yet, our understanding of these things is often superficial, or even mistaken at times. G6 science class at GIS inspires our students to seek knowledge about the physical and living worlds around us by using practical scientific skills such as careful observation, precise recording of data, critical analysis of information, and clear communication of findings. By integrating knowledge and skills, or theory and practice, in the study of the sciences, our students gain intellectual enrichment that is unsurpassed.

Social Studies - In G6 social studies class at GIS, we emphasize the importance of learning about the past to understand better the present, and perhaps, to plan wisely for the future. Our inquiries into ancient civilizations around the world provide students with the opportunity to learn where, when, how, and why agriculture, writing, law, and trade were developed. As a preface to our historical investigations, the concept of history is discussed. That is, students are asked to think about the process by which important events, inventions, and individuals from the past have entered the historical record. G6 social studies students will also get the chance to see how different sources can lead to decidedly different interpretations about the same historical event. Learning the reasons why histories are written in certain ways is a valuable lesson in critical inquiry for our students.

Art/Drama/Music - Many students find great satisfaction expressing themselves through visual or aural media. Given the ubiquity of multimedia, such as television, the Internet, and live performances, in all aspects of our lives today, it is good educational practice to insure that our students have the knowledge and skills to appreciate and execute visual and aural expressions of creativity. Whether one's career turns out to be in business, the sciences, or even education, having a strong foundation in the fine arts provides a set of skills and knowledge that are increasingly necessary for understanding and participating in the social, economic, and political events across the globe today.

Physical Education - Students in G6 physical education class are encouraged to develop both physical abilities and personal and social skills. The indoor and outdoor physical education activities at GIS help students to acquire a sense of accomplishment that will boost their feelings of self-esteem and their respect for others. By encouraging a pro-active stance toward physical education in our students, we have found that they often apply that positive outlook to other areas of life. The old adage, “a healthy body leads to a healthy mind,” rings true.

Computer Lab - Computer technology and its myriad applications are an indispensable part of our world today. G6 students receive instruction and computer time that is practical for their educational level. Our trans-disciplinary approach to learning also helps reinforce children's verbal, visual, and numerical skills as they develop their computer skills.
