Gregg International School K5 Class
Course Descriptions
Mathematics - Key concepts of mathematics are introduced to children so that they will have a strong foundation upon which to build their numerical proficiency. Children learn to recognize, count, and order numbers through 20. Simple equations using addition and subtraction are practiced, as well as exercises using the concepts of “more than” and “less than.” Children will also learn about time, graphs, patterns, and how to solve problems using manipulative materials.
Reading - The main objective of the K5 reading program is to nurture in each child an enthusiasm for books and a desire to read. Since a mastery of words and language is essential for success in all facets of learning, we will help the children to develop a positive attitude toward the written and spoken word. In K5 class, the children start to understand the concept of the narrative and its constituent parts. While listening and oral activities are emphasized at this stage of reading instruction, children will also learn to recognize the alphabet, begin to grasp sound/letter relationships, and deepen their awareness and appreciation of language.
Writing/Drawing - Encouragement in children's written expression is emphasized in the K5 writing program. Getting children to develop a proactive stance toward writing is achieved through activities that include making up stories together, listening to a variety of forms of written expression, and responding to those forms of written expression. Thus, the children begin to encounter the sender-receiver relationship that is the nexus of communication. Of course, a variety of writing materials are available in our learning centers with which the children can explore, exercise, and expand their skills and knowledge of written expression.
Science - Learning the basics of science is a prerequisite for understanding the world around us. Since we learn by doing, children will have many opportunities to observe, measure, interpret, and predict how phenomena occur under various conditions. Topics for exploration include seasons, animals, and plants, among other wonders of nature.
Social Studies - We have a culturally diverse student body, yet each child shares things in common with the others such as having a family and friends. By linking these commonalities among our students, they learn to value each culture's contribution to our world, thus making it a richer place. A variety of activities and projects that focus on the importance of international understanding among peoples are sure to enliven the children's interest and participation.
Using Computers - Children are introduced to computers using the Jump Start Kindergarten program, which with its trans-disciplinary framework complements their understanding of other curriculum areas. Later in the school year a variety of interactive software with curricular applications are introduced which have proven to enhance children's understanding of numbers, spelling, and reading.
