G2 Class

Mathematics

Introduction to several important math concepts that strengthen skills in basic arithmetic. Recognition of numbers ranging from 1-1,000, fractional parts of objects, and an introduction to multiplication and division. The style of instruction in addition and subtraction involving three-digit numbers without regrouping and two-digit numbers with regrouping promotes a positive association between students and numbers.

Higher-level concepts involving patterns such as measurement, time and geometry are explored?metric measures for length, capacity and mass; the terms “a.m.” and “p.m.” and fractions of hours; and lines and related concepts of segments, end points and symmetry.

Practical activities include measuring and weighing various objects, telling time to the nearest minute, and interactive exercises exploring the concepts of perimeter and area. Problem-solving activities?in which students must determine whether addition, subtraction, multiplication or division is required for a solution?expand functional math skills.

Reading

Introduction of different genres of literature, such as poetry and folklore, stirs curiosity and invigorates perseverance in reading. Instruction in use of phonics, structural analysis and context clues enhances comprehension and deciphering new words. Learn to make predictions about the narrative content, and to check and clarify while reading. Techniques for building vocabulary include homophones, figurative language, and the exploration of words with multiple meanings. Becoming comfortable with alphabetical order prepares the students for exploring dictionaries and the encyclopedia, those indispensable reference sources.

Writing

Writing skills improved through daily practice and instructive encouragement builds confidence in using written communication for self-expression. Brainstorming and collaborative work are methods to stimulate the creative impulses that can be channeled into written expression. Given the opportunity to select writing topics of interest.

Being an essential foundation for all aspects and areas of education, students’ written expression deals with issues and subjects associated with other curricular areas. Trans-disciplinary writing is a sure way to illuminate an understanding of the connections between various fields of knowledge, while also providing excellent documentation of the students’ progress. Regular writing conferences to receive help in editing, spelling and punctuation empower students to better clarify their ideas and revise written work.

Science

The strengthening of the powers of observation, inquiry and problem solving is an outcome of hands-on experiences in research and experimentation. While not expected to meet the rigorous and time-consuming methods of professional scientists, the students are introduced to these concepts by way of experiments in which the metamorphoses of shapes and structures, and the properties of organic and inorganic materials is observed over time. Gaining valuable experience in the “what,” “how” and “why” of science spurs the students to investigate other phenomena ripe for inquiry.

Social Studies

The theme is “A Trip Around the World.” The multicultural student body provides an excellent resource for learning about the roles of family members in various cultures and how traditional holidays are celebrated. By examining each other’s heritage in a spirit of cooperation, the students’ knowledge of inhabitants of distant geographical locales is broadened, while an understanding of the family system as a model social organization transcending time and place is deepened. Projects and activities include dramatization, music, games and art that reflect the lessons’ topics.

Art/Drama/Music

Art, drama and music provide a wonderful means for the students to express their creativity in constructive ways. Some may find visual or musical forms of self-expression more satisfying than using words to communicate their ideas and feelings. Each year, elementary school students produce a great variety of visual artifacts, put on stage performances and sing in a school concert. These activities offer the chance to find new and original ways of communicating ideas and feelings. By participating in artistic endeavors, they also experience the rewards of producing media with aesthetic appeal.

Physical Education

Plenty of exercise ensures proper physical development. Our outdoor play area provides ample space in a safe environment for the students to run, jump and exercise. Exercise and play also are essential in helping the students acquire personal and social habits that are necessary for being productive members of society. All aspects of a child’s growth and learning are important.

Computer Lab

Ample computer time each week develops cybernetic skills. In addition to keyboard practice and Internet searches, the students use the latest software that complement and enhance other curricular areas, such as reading and writing, social studies and science. Developing technical expertise, as well as broadening the knowledge base through a trans-disciplinary approach to learning, is a valuable experience.
