Not What It Seems!

The eye sees only what the mind is prepared to comprehend. Henri Bergson

In our art class, G4 students had fun exploring optical illusions. We looked at different examples and learned how these special images can trick our eyes and brains – some made us laugh, others left us scratching our heads. What we see isn’t always what’s really there!
The students were amazed at how a simple drawing could appear to move, bend, or even pop off the page. Inspired by what we saw, we started an art project: cone art! Using only black markers and white colored pencils, students challenged themselves to create an illusion.

Many students thought it would be too tricky at first, but they quickly learned how to use shading to create a subtle contrast between light and dark color. In the end, every drawing became its own little illusion. Did the cones pop off the page, or did our eyes just get tricked? It’s hard to tell…check out the pictures and decide for yourself!
