Candy Molecules : G5 + G6

Tasty Molecules!!!

As part of our exploration of atoms, molecules and compounds in November, Grade 5+6 made molecules using chemical shorthand and colour-coded candy. We made molecules such as water (H20), carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4). Then we created our own molecules. The students loved creating the molecules and especially enjoyed eating them at the end!

  • The students learned that very different substances can contain the same elements, such as H20 (water) and H202 (ammonia).
  • Students learned how atoms have rules for how they bond together, the rules make molecules look the way they do.
  • Students learned how to read chemical shorthand and use a periodic table to locate the corresponding names for the element symbol.
